Carola supports research to reveal corporate lobbying on trade agreements

Thursday, May 22, 2014

Many unions responded to a call to give a present to Carola by donating to Corporate Observatory Europe (CEO). Carola Fischbach-Pyttel is no longer running for re-election as EPSU General Secretary and will soon retire. She had expressed the wish not to receive any presents.
Carola could hand out a check of 6250 € to Olivier Hoedeman the Director of CEO, on 22 May. CEO has been collaborating closely with EPSU over the years on many issues such as water privatisation and remunicipalisation, the EU's twisted economic governance and transparency in lobbying. Both EPSU and CEO are part of the Alter-EU coalition that wants stricter rules to apply to lobbyists.

Handing over the check and thanking the unions that had contributed to the present, Carola said: "I rate the work of CEO very highly. You are exposing how business groups try to get a grip on European politics to the detriment of working people. And this needs to change.  I am glad the EPSU unions allowed me to make this personal contribution."

Olivier Hoedeman answered:  "We are thankful as it is through contributions of people like you that we can fund our research and reveal just how pervasive and perverse the influence of corporate lobbies is. Our recent work focuses on how business groups like BusinessEurope and the Transatlantic Business Council write the rules of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and twist them in their advantage against popular concern."
